Demian Maia explains how he began training Ian Garry, says the Irishman has "tools to be a champion"

Demian Maia recently explained how he began training Ian Garry and what he has noticed from the Irishman so far. He noted that the welterweight contender is eager to learn and constantly improve, which will bode well for his UFC career.

The former UFC middleweight title challenger has been an integral part of 'The Future's training camps since he departed his former team. The change has resulted in Garry spending more time in Brazil, but has also offered him the opportunity to continuously improve his grappling and become a more complete fighter.

During his appearance on Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson's JAXXON PODCAST, the Brazilian disclosed that the Irishman's wife had initially contacted him about training him. Maia lavished praise on the welterweight contender and mentioned that after a few sessions, Garry enjoyed their time and continued to train at his academy in Brazil. He said:

"[Garry] is a great guy. He's a star in the making for sure...He flew there [to my seminars in Barcelona] and he did two days with me, and he liked it. So he said, 'When I go to Brazil, I'm gonna train with you a couple times a week'...He's nice, he's humble in his personal life. He wants to learn...very open to learn, very smart fighter. I think he had the tools to be a champion. For sure, he's gonna for the title."
