Dr. David Abbasi explains Renato Moicano's UFC Paris shoulder injury in under a minute, says it's bad enough to require surgery
Renato Moicano soldiered through a shoulder injury to score a TKO win over Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC Paris. Per sports surgeon Dr. David Abbasi, the fighter might need surgery.
During the contest, the Brazilian's acromion was seen protruding, suggesting the fighter had suffered a dislocation in his shoulder region.
Following the bout, Moicano posted an x-ray of his shoulder, showing a clear gap between his clavicle and acromion, while revealing that he had injured his shoulder three weeks ahead of the contest.
Reacting to the injury Dr. Abbasi said:
"What's going on with that is what we call a shoulder separation... A shoulder separation like the one Moicano shows is different from a shoulder dislocation... Essentially a shoulder separation occurs when you fall directly on the shoulder and the energy goes through the AC joint tearing the AC ligament and the coracoclavicular ligaments."
Dr. Abbasi added:
"Now that this bone is unchecked it will rise up because it's no longer held down by the ligaments, it's being pulled up by other muscles like the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The fact that he was able to compete at this high a level is impressive which shows the toughness of UFC fighters like Moicano, this requires surgery to get this corrected."

In the headliner attraction at the Accor Arena on Sept. 28, Moicano used his prolific ground game to neutralize his opponent's striking. He spent the majority of the opening round on top of Saint Denis, raining down vicious ground and pound strikes.
The debilitating ground strikes opened up huge cuts around Denis' eyes which worsened as the fight went on. This forced the ringside physician to call off the contest before heading into the third round, thereby granting Moicano a TKO win by default.
Renato Moicano calls out Paddy Pimblett and Dan Hooker
Renato Moicano wants an "easy" payday in his next fight and the flamboyant Brazilian views Paddy Pimblett and Dan Hooker as two of the easiest fights there is.
Talking to Michael Bisping during his post-fight interview at UFC Paris an adrenaline-filled Moicano went on an all-out rant on the French government, before shifting his sights to his fellow lightweights, saying:
"Next I want easy money. Paddy Pimblett, easy money, Dan Hooker, easy money. Don't come up with bull s**t fights. Don't come up with guys that are tough. I want easy fights. I just beat a hell of an athlete everybody was talking about, Beniot Saint-Denis, but guess what? 'Money Mociano' is the man tonight."
