Dustin Poirier addresses speculation about Colby Covington matchup: "Will never make money with me"
Former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier recently squashed any speculation that his next opponent will be Colby Covington.
'The Diamond' spoke with Fight Bananas to address the rumors of a fight with 'Chaos' who himself is a former interim UFC welterweight champion.
Poirier said it plainly and clearly (via Championship Rounds on X):
"[Colby] will never make money with me. It's B.S."
It could be a subtle jab that can lead to Covington answering back, we don't know. But there seems to be a finality to Poirier's words. If ever this bout happens, however, it will surely gain lots of attention just by the sheer star power of both men.
Possible future match-ups for Dustin Poirier after UFC 302
At UFC 302 last June, Dustin Poirier lost his second bid for a UFC title. Against Islam Makhachev, the Louisiana native put on a valiant effort but came up short, getting submitted by the Dagestani champion in the fifth round.
Despite being 2-3 in his last five fights, Poirier's star power and blood-and-guts fighting style maintained his relevancy in the sport. Even coming off of a loss, 'The Diamond' is still one of the most watched fighters in the UFC with significant fandom. Whoever he'll fight next will have to be of equal relevance.
Since the Colby Covington bout is out of the picture at the moment, a few standouts can be a good dance partners for Poirier. A bout with no. 9-ranked Rafael Fiziev, one of the few in the top 10 Poirier hasn't faced yet, could be a fun back-and-forth stand-up war.
Another good match-up is no. 7-ranked Beneil Dariush, who is also coming off of a loss. However, two money-making bouts are possible for the former interim UFC lightweight king, Paddy Pimblett and Conor McGregor.
McGregor has had a legendary trilogy with Poirier, generating record-setting revenues for the UFC. Similarly, the rising star Pimblett might be the perfect "old guard vs new blood" affair, which can draw similar attention to a fourth McGregor fight.
