Dustin Poirier reveals huge news regarding Justin Gaethje rematch

Following his huge win against Rafael Fiziev last month, Justin Gaethje called for a potential clash with Dustin Poirier as he seeks another run at UFC gold. It seems the fight could be closer than first expected.

Despite many expecting him to lose to the European phenom, 'The Highlight' did what he does best and put on a show for the fans, taking home yet another fight-of-the-night accolade. The NCAA Division I wrestler handed 'Ataman' his first loss since his UFC debut, snapping the rising star's six-fight win streak.

While discussing a possible matchup against Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier claimed it was a fight to make and revealed that the clash could take place sometime in the summer:

"It seems like the Gaethje fight makes the most sense. We'll see, I think it could happen this summer. But I don't have an answer for you, I don't know what's next, but it's looking like the Gaethje fight. He's calling for it. His people around him, I saw an interview, they said they don't think I'm gonna take it. They're some silly goose man."

Dustin Poirier has been the man to beat in the lightweight division for some time, having only lost twice—both of those coming in title fights—for almost seven years in the weight class.

With his impressive victory against Michael Chandler in his most recent octagon appearance, 'The Diamond' is within touching distance of a shot at Islam Makhachev's throne, which will likely come if he gets his hand raised next time out.

Check out what Poirier had to say about the potential clash against Gaethje in the video below.

Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje: What happened the first time the two met in the octagon?

Two of the most entertaining fighters on the planet could be on a collision course to meet in the octagon as they hope to fight their way into a title shot. However, this isn't the first time they've met in the UFC.

Back in 2018, Poirier and Justin Gaethje collided for the fight of the year after enduring a four-round war before the eventual finish. In a back-and-forth affair, it seemed as though Trevor Wittman's student was on his way to potentially getting a TKO finish due to his vicious leg kicks.

Despite the accumulated damage, Dustin managed to land a huge punch and followed it up with a barrage of strikes. This led to a stoppage victory in this blockbuster bout.
