Okamoto confirmed that it was indeed a staph infection that plagued the former interim champion. It was also reported that Poirier was not responding to the medication administered and will remain in hospital until further developments.

Some context on Dustin Poirier’s (@DustinPoirier) IG posts about being hospitalized … told me it’s staph, but he’s not responding to antibiotics over the last 24 hours. Undergoing further blood work now, hopefully get some answers today.

Dustin Poirier last fought Michael Chandler at UFC 281 in what could only be described as a war. 'The Diamond' emerged victorious with a submission in the third round.

Anthony Smith explains why Dustin Poirier would jump at the chance to fight Conor McGregor

Anthony Smith recently claimed that Dustin Poirier will take any opportunity to fight Conor McGregor for the fourth time, insisting that his displayed lack of interest in making that happen is simply an act.

Speaking to Michael Bisping on the Believe You Me podcast, Smith claimed that Poirier would not refuse the money-making opportunity afforded by the UFC's poster boy. He stated:

"We all know the prize tag that comes with a Conor McGregor fight... So you can say all you want, 'Oh! I don't want it.' I love Dustin Poirier, I love everything he stands for... Dustin's full of s**t. He's going to take that paycheck any chance he gets. I'm here to watch it, I'll buy it and I'll put money in his pocket. I'm here for it. Just for the buildup."

Dustin Poirier has beaten the former two-division champion twice in the past. They have faced each other three times in total and Poirier boasts a record of 2-1 over the Irishman. Their last fight saw McGregor suffer a leg fracture that's forced him to remain on the sidelines for more than a year.

However, considering the recent Twitter barbs that the two rivals exchanged, it is possible that we will see a fourth fight between the two.
