Dustin Poirier shares three-word reaction to UFC 302 loss vs. Islam Makhachev earning award nomination
Dustin Poirier recently came clean on Islam Makhachev's Submission of the Year nomination for submitting him at UFC 302. Poirier didn't shy away from wearing his emotions on his sleeve after witnessing Makahchev's nomination.
Poirier trusts his striking a lot more than his ground game to get the better of his rivals. Still, he defended all of Makahchev's submission attempts for the entirety of the first four rounds of their UFC 302 fight. Poirier also had his moments in the fight as he became Makhachev's first title defense rival to make him bleed in a title fight.
However, the final round of the encounter proved disastrous for Poirier. Midway in the round, Makhachev went for an ankle pick and shoved Poirier's leg away to get him to the ground. He followed this move with a guillotine choke but transitioned it into a D'Arce choke which finally made Poirier tap.
A recent post on X from the Lafayette native revealed that he was in "pain" after witnessing the UFC's decision to nominate Makahchev for Submission of the Year for submitting him at UFC 302. It's caption read:
"PAIN @ufc PAIN"
Dustin Poirier wants to fight Nate Diaz after recent altercation with Islam Makhachev
The respectful relationship between Dustin Poirier and the Dagestani camp of UFC fighters began after Poirier's defeat against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. Poirier's UFC 302 encounter also ended with a respectful exchange between him, Makhachev, and Nurmagomedov.
Makhachev recently got into an altercation with Nate Diaz at the pre-UFC 311 press meet, which reportedly took place after the conclusion of the UFC 310 weigh-ins.
A short clip of the instance showcased both Diaz and Makhachev throwing a water bottle at each other. Poirier gained information about the incident through an X update from @ChampRDS.
Poirier also left a comment on it desiring a fight against Diaz after his altercation with Makhachev. It read:
"Bring Nate [Diaz] back and let me smash him."
