Eddie Hearn rubbishes Chris Eubank Jr.'s chances of landing mega-fight against Canelo Alvarez: "He knows he can't compete"
Canelo Alvarez is currently in talks to fight Chris Eubank Jr. next in a stunning turn of events. Having been reported to be negotiating a deal with either his WBA mandatory challenger, Edgar Berlanga, or with Jermall Charlo, the addition of 'NextGen' as a possible opponent has come as a shock.
Eubank Jr. currently fights at middleweight (160 pounds), one division below Alvarez, who is the undisputed super middleweight (168 pounds) champion.
Following news that a potential Alvarez-Eubank Jr. clash was to be scheduled, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn shared his thoughts on the surprising turn of events.
The Matchroom Boxing chairman, who represents Berlanga, stated that the fight was purely a money-grab by the Brit.
Hearn was recently interviewed by Boxing News, where he was asked to share his thoughts on the potential super middleweight title clash, saying this:
"For me, I think a welterweight Conor Benn beats [Eubank Jr.]. Eubank, although he is game, he's smart enough to know he can't compete with Canelo Alvarez at 168 [pounds]. Listen, if the fortune is there, he's taking the fight. So good luck to him, if he lands it. But we're pushing our man, Edgar Berlanga, WBA mandatory - big strong super middleweight that can really punch. Mexico against Puerto Rico."
