Errol Spence Jr. shares surprising take on Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight: “Let him try to be great”

Errol Spence Jr. has not competed since his TKO defeat to Terence Crawford in July 2023, the first loss of his professional career. The pair were rivals at welterweight for years, but with 'Bud' eyeing a clash with mega-star Canelo Alvarez, 'The Truth' has shared an unexpected opinion about the bout.

Crawford and Alvarez are both viewed as two of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world at present, and their potential clash would be one of the biggest fights ever.

While the Mexican has expressed little interest in facing the Nebraska native, Spence Jr. has backed his former opponent to hand the undisputed super middleweight champion his first loss at 168 pounds.

The former welterweight champion's comments on a potential Canelo-Crawford clash were posted to X by talkSPORT boxing editor Michael Benson, who wrote this:

"Errol Spence on Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford: 'If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great, let him try to be great. I'm with it. I'd be going for Bud. I don't know if he'd win or lose, but if anybody can pull it off, he can pull it off. He's chasing greatness.'"

Terence Crawford refrains from speaking on Errol Spence Jr. retirement rumors

Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. faced off in a historic evening for boxing on July 29, 2023. The pair went to war for the chance to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era, and both pugilists entered the ring undefeated.

Many expected the fight to be of a back-and-forth nature, but after the opening bell rang it quickly became apparent that 'Bud' was in control. Having never been dropped before in his career, 'The Truth' hit the canvas on three separate occasions before being finished via a TKO in Round 9.

Both men have since moved to super welterweight, with the Nebraska native set to face WBA champion Israil Madrimov in his divisional debut. Meanwhile, Spence Jr. is in talks to fight WBC and WBO champion, Sebastian Fundora.

But rumors are swirling that 'The Truth' has called time on his boxing career, and during a recent interview ahead of his clash with Madrimov, 'Bud' was asked for his thoughts. He said this:

"Like I said man, I'm only worried about one person. I'm not overlooking this guy, he's a tough opponent. It's gonna be tough."
