“Everything is perfect now” - Bampara Kouyate says it’s all been smooth sailing heading into Luke Lessei clash
Bampara Kouyate's love for fighting is what ultimately convinced him to take the short-notice opportunity in his ONE Championship debut
After coming up short in his promotional premiere last October, the French standout will look for his first win inside the Circle this Friday night, July 5, when he returns for a clash with one of the featherweight Muay Thai division's most exciting prospects, Luke Lessei.
During an interview with Sportskeeda MMA ahead of his sophomore appearance, Kouyate offered some insight into why he took the short-notice opportunity against Shakir Al-Tekreeti in October and revealed how he's feeling ahead of his fight with Lessei after having ample time to prepare.
"I was very skeptical in the beginning, but in the end, I said ‘Yes’ because I love fighting, I love to fight, and I love Muay Thai, so I just took the opportunity," he said.
"But now, I would say I feel much better to have had the time to prepare very well with my trainer and my coach, and everything is perfect now."
Luke Lessei primed to make it two-in-a-row against Bampara Kouyate
While Kouyate is seeking his first win inside the Circle, Luke Lessei will look to continue his climb up the featherweight Muay Thai ranks.
Debuting in December, the Dubuque, Iowa native went toe-to-toe with 'Smokin' Jo Nattawut in a late Fight of the Year contender at ONE Fight Night 17. Though he came up short, 'The Chef' more than earned another shot on martial arts' biggest global stage. He got that chance two months later when he returned at ONE Fight Night 19 for a clash with Eddie Abasolo.
Lessei came out on top that night, securing a split decision over 'Silky Smooth.'
Will Lessei make it two in a row, or will Bampara Kouyate finally break through and see his hand raised in ONE Championship?
