Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III: Full results
Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III just wrapped up. The boxing event took place at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, on Aug. 24. Apart from the highly anticipated main event, it featured several Mexican boxers and a few who had their roots in the country. This article recaps the fights and explores the full results.
The main event was the rematch of the July 2023 exhibition bout between Mayweather and Gotti III. The rematch was also a non-scored, eight-round exhibition bout. Despite the apparent lack of competitive relevance, there was a lot of intrigue surrounding the match due to the nature of Mayweather and Gotti III's rivalry.
In the first fight, the referee disqualified both men after the sixth round as they continued to ignore his repeated warnings to avoid using foul language for each other in the ring. The unceremonious ending frustrated the fight fans at the time. There was pressure on both men to put on an entertaining performance for the fans in the rematch.
Mayweather, who gave up nearly 21 pounds in size, came out guns blazing and stung Gotti III with sleek combinations to set the tone. While Gotti was aggressive and tried his best to put on a show, his punches mostly hit the air. While stray shots connected for the former MMA fighter, Mayweather did a great job rolling with the punches to minimize the impact.
The same pattern continued for the majority of the fight, which could have ended in a lopsided decision victory for Mayweather if scoring was involved. Mayweather's technique and speed belied his 47 years as he appears to have retained his attributes. To his credit, Gotti III never quit trying to hit the former five-division boxing champion but he simply did not possess the level of skills required to breach Mayweather's formidable defense.
Rising Mexican star Alan David Picasso fought Armenia's Azat Hovhannisyan for the WBC Silver super bantamweight title on the main card.
Picasso has emerged as a formidable force in the division in recent years. While his knockout potential was questionable early on in his career, he has turned things around over the last few years. Twelve of his 14 most recent wins came by T/KO.
The latest fight marked a significant step up in competition for Picasso as Hovhannisyan brought proven finishing ability and veteran experience.
Picasso gained an upper hand from the opening round with a varied attack, keeping Hovhannisyan guessing. For the most part, the Armenian boxer tried to attack Picasso's body and found some success in doing so. However, the Mexican never allowed him to fully execute the game plan and steadily worked his way to a unanimous decision win.
Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III 2: Undercard results
Former boxing champion Victor Ortiz returned to competition after a two-year layoff to fight Rodrigo Damian Coria on the main card. Ortiz was 1-1-1 heading into his bout. His latest win, a unanimous decision victory against Todd Manuel in May 2022, was his only professional boxing triumph in nearly seven years.
Meanwhile, Coria was coming off a unanimous decision loss against Milan Pratt in February 2024. The biggest win of his professional boxing career came in August 2023 when he defeated Marco Ezequiel Garcia Ovejero by split decision to capture the vacant WBO Latino super welterweight title.
While Ortiz was the more experienced boxer heading into the fight, Coria had youth on his side and he was also the more active fighter in recent years.
The lack of recent fights appeared to have an impact on Ortiz's performance as he struggled to maintain a consistent activity level after showing flashes of brilliance in the early rounds. Coria was the more active fighter for the majority of rounds. Although it was a non-scored bout, he appeared to have done enough to beat the former champion.
Highly touted prospect and Floyd Mayweather's protege Curmel Moton fought Victor Vazquez in a six-round lightweight contest on the main card. After dominating the amateur boxing scene with 18 national titles and an impressive 156-7 record, Moton made his professional boxing debut in September 2023. He held a 4-0 record (3 KO) heading into the Aug. 24 bout against another relative newcomer in Vazquez (5-2-1).
Moton has been praised for his ability to fight equally effectively at various ranges. His ability to do so was on full display in the latest fight as he moved effectively in and out of range of Vazquez's shots.
Less than a minute into the fight, Moton used his superior speed and countered Vazquez with a left hook. As a visibly shaken Vazquez tried to retreat, a thunderous combination of left and right hooks dropped him to the canvas. Vazquez could not answer the 10-count and Moton was declared the winner by KO.
Rising super middleweight Cesar Vaca took on the more experienced Luis Rodriguez on the preliminary card. While Rodriguez was the aggressor who moved forward for the most part, Vaca's strikes were numerically and qualitatively more effective as he seemed to have caused more damage. While fans and the broadcast team felt that Vaca deserved a clear-cut victory, the judges scored the bout as a majority decision win for him.
Aaron Silva stopped Alberto Artiga in the third round to extend his record to 15-1. Silva established his dominance in the ring and worked with different strikes to break his opponent. Artiga refused to go down despite absorbing damaging shots. However, the referee did not allow him to take unnecessary punishment, stopping the fight in the third round after Silva had him trapped in the corner.
In the first fight of the night, Cecilia Rodriguez defeated late-replacement opponent Arlen Sanchez Aguirre by unanimous decision. Both women had their moments in the eight-round contest and despite being unprepared, Sanchez brought the fight to Rodriguez. However, she could not do enough to win.
