Former boxing world champion, who handed Vasiliy Lomachenko his first loss, suffers horrific car crash in Mexico

Vasiliy Lomachenko is arguably the best amateur boxer of all time, holding a record of 396-1. However, his professional career did not begin the way he would have hoped, suffering a loss to Orlando Salido in his second pro bout.

Salido is an accomplished boxer in his own right, having won the IBF and WBO featherweight world titles and compiling a record of 44-14-4 (1NC). He retired from the sport in 2017, citing the numerous wars that he had over his career as the main reason for his decision.

Since his retirement, the former world champion has had several run-ins with law enforcement, including an arrest in 2018 for stealing 16 cans of beer. However, the 43-year old has found himself in far more serious trouble with the police after crashing a car into a house on Friday (5 June) morning.

Details of the crash were reported to X by talkSPORT boxing editor Michael Benson, who wrote this:

"Orlando Salido is in police custody in hospital after crashing his truck into a house in the early hours of Friday morning in Sonora, Mexico. A man has died from the incident and a woman is injured, while Salido is also in "serious" condition."

Vasiliy Lomachenko could face Gervonta Davis later this year according to reports

Vasiliy Lomachenko has been viewed as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of the last decade.

Having competed for world championships since his professional debut against Jose Luis Ramirez in 2013, the Ukrainian is no stranger to the big stage. But according to reports from Boxing Scene, 'Loma' could be headed for his biggest fight to date, a mega-clash with fellow pound-for-pound great, Gervonta Davis.

Davis recently defended his WBA lightweight title against Frank Martin, knocking out his opponent in Round 8 when the pair clashed on 15 June.

TalkSPORT boxing editor Michael Benson recently took to X to repost news that both the WBA lightweight title, and Lomachenko's IBF lightweight title, will be on the line should the pair agree a deal to fight.

Benson wrote this:

"Gervonta Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko talks are likely to resume within the next week for a potential WBA & IBF lightweight world title unification fight in Novemver/December, Bob Arum has said."
