Former UFC lightweight champion claims it's time to settle rivalry with Conor McGregor; ready to fight at any weight class
Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has recently been camping for a money fight against former double champion Conor McGregor and believes this is the perfect time for a throw down with the Irishman inside the Octagon.
Dos Anjos was supposed to defend his lightweight title against McGregor back in 2016, but unfortunately, the fight had to be canceled later because the Brazilian champion had to pull out of the contest with a foot injury. Dos Anjos was then famously replaced by Nate Diaz, who grabbed the opportunity with both hands and shook up the world of MMA by beating the Irishman at UFC 196.
"No better time to fight Conor McGregor", says Rafael dos Anjos
Dos Anjos believes that now is the best time for him to complete the unfinished business by taking on Conor McGregor inside the Octagon later this year. Speaking to MMA Junkie, dos Anjos explained why feels that now is the best time to lock horns with the power-punching Irishman.
“The whole history. I was the lightweight champion, he was coming up to challenge me and also, I got a lot of fights. That was the only one that I didn’t make it. That’s what I would like to have on my record, a fight with Conor. That’s why I tweeted out, ‘No more ifs.’ You see a lot of people say, ‘If that fight would’ve happened; If RDA won, If Conor won, what would’ve happened with Conor? If Conor had lost what would’ve happened?’ A lot of ifs. So it’s time to just put that thing on the table and let’s go. Let’s make this fight happen at any weight.”
McGregor recently announced his retirement from MMA on Twitter. However, this is his third retirement in the past four years which leaves people wondering whether he actually is hanging up his gloves for good. As of now, likely odds are that we will see Conor McGregor return to action inside the Octagon again. dos Anjos is surely among the group of people who are skeptical of the Irish superstar’s retirement.
“I don’t believe he’s retiring right now. That’s his third time retiring. I’m not buying that. He’s too young and I believe he still has a lot in him. I don’t think he’s retiring right now. If you look at the whole situation, with me and Conor, I am ahead of him in the rankings at welterweight and this fight was supposed to happen four years ago and it didn’t happen. That would be a great fight. That’s the fight to make.”
