Former two-time champ quotes David Goggins as he reacts to ex-UFC fighter's bizarre fractured p*nis during BJJ training
Bantamweight legend Dominick Cruz responded to the unfortunate penile fracture that ex-UFC fighter Mateus Mendonca suffered during a BJJ training session.
The 25-year-old had to undergo an emergency surgery, which sidelined him for nearly two months. In a recent interview with Ag Fight, Mendonca admitted that he often trained without the groin cup and cautioned fellow fighters not to make the same mistake:
“It’s a good idea to warn everyone – all the guys who train jiu-jitsu, grappling, MMA, anything that involves contact: wear a cup to avoid accidents. From now on, I can do any training, I won’t train without a cup anymore [laughs]. You have to be careful. It doesn’t hurt, it prevents accidents, it prevents a lot of things." [H/T Ag Fight]
@fullvoilence re-posted Mendonca's quote on Instagram.

Cruz, the former two-time UFC bantamweight champion, took to the comments section, jokingly posting endurance athlete and motivational speaker David Goggins' quote as a reaction to the incident:
"Goggins says: stay hard."
Mendonca, a member of the Chute Boxe Diego Lima, competed in the UFC in 2023-2024. Despite achieving an impressive knockout victory in Dana White's Contender Series and maintaining an undefeated professional MMA record, he struggled in the UFC. The promotion released him earlier this year after a 0-3 run across the bantamweight and flyweight divisions.
Mateus Mendonca shares how he got the unfortunate injury
In the aforementioned interview with Ag Fight, Mateus Mendonca discussed how he sustained a penile fracture, detailing the incident chronologically. The Brazilian said that he was at his mother's house in Maranhao for the holidays and decided to train jiu-jitsu a day before returning to Sao Paulo. The injury occured during that training session:
“During the second roll, I went to roll with Bruno and he hit my private parts with his knee when I was trying to pass the guard. I felt an incredible amount of pain and ran to the bathroom. It started to burn. But then the pain went away, and I kept going." [H/T Ag Fight]
He added:
"When I was already here [in São Paulo], a month later, training normally, without pain, I started to notice some problems. I started to move and there was a lump. So I went to the hospital. When I got there, the doctor did an exam and immediately transferred me to another hospital for surgery.” [H/T Ag Fight]
Mendonca noted that very few fighters wear a groin cup unless they are participating in a professional fight. He warned others in the combat sports community that accidents can occur at any time, and using a cup can provide protection in those situations.
