Former UFC champion reacts after Jon Jones calls on Dana White to get his "loss out of the history books": "We never counted it"
Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley claimed the MMA community considers Jon Jones an undefeated fighter.
In December 2009, Jones dominated Matt Hamill for the first four minutes of their fight at 'The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale.' Unfortunately, 'Bones' was disqualified toward the end of round one for landing illegal 12-6 elbows, which is the only loss he's suffered in his 28-fight professional MMA career.
Earlier this week, the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports Mixed Martial Arts Committee made several rule changes, including 12-6 elbows being legal. Jones reacted to the news by saying this on Instagram:
"Undefeated then, undefeated now.. @danawhite we gotta get that loss out of the history books"
Many fans took to Jon Jones' Instagram comment section and voiced their support for the 2009 result to be overturned. Meanwhile, Tyron Woodley downplayed the effect of the controversial loss by saying this:
"we never counted it"
Jon Jones is widely considered one of the top two greatest fighters of all time. Yet, the disqualification loss against Matt Hamill has always been a stain on his fighting career. Dana White has attempted in the past to have the result overturned, so it'll be intriguing to see if anything can be done with the new rule change.
Jon Jones likely keeping a close eye on interim heavyweight title fight at UFC 304
On Saturday, July 27, the UFC returns to England for a pay-per-view featuring two title fights. In the co-main event, Tom Aspinall looks to defend his interim heavyweight title in a rematch against Curtis Blaydes.
Aspinall and Blaydes first fought in July 2022. The heavyweight matchup didn't last long due to the former suffering a fight-ending knee injury in 15 seconds.
Jon Jones will defend his UFC heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic when he returns from a torn pectoral muscle later this year. With that said, Jones could be watching Aspinall vs Blaydes, as fans have continuously called for a matchup between 'Bones' and the interim champion.
It's unclear what the UFC plans to do with the heavyweight division. Aspinall is defending his interim throne against Blaydes, but Jones likely won't fight Miocic until October, November, or December. Therefore, the winner at UFC 304 might be sidelined for an extended period before fighting for the undisputed world title.
