Glover Teixeira's run in the UFC as the light heavyweight champion

Glover Teixeira made history in the promotion as the second-oldest first-time champion at 42 years old.

Teixeira was expected to fight Jan Błachowicz on September 25, 2021, for the light-heavyweight championship, but the bout was postponed and rescheduled for October 30, 2021. In a stunning performance, the Brazilian submitted Błachowicz with a rear-naked choke in the second round, winning light-heavyweight gold and earning the Performance of the Night award.

Teixeira's first title defense was set against Jiří Procházka at UFC 274 but the fight was postponed for unknown reasons and eventually rescheduled for UFC 275. Procházka defeated Teixeira in the fifth round in a back-and-forth battle via rear-naked choke submission. Despite the loss, Teixeira was awarded the Fight of the Night bonus.

A rematch between Procházka and Teixeira was scheduled but Procházka pulled out due to a shoulder injury that would require surgery and at least six months of rehabilitation. The Brazilian refused a replacement fight against Magomed Ankalaev, and the vacant championship was awarded to the winner of the co-main event between former champion Jan Błachowicz and Ankalaev which concluded in a draw.

With the title remaining vacant, Teixeira faced Jamahal Hill at UFC 283, for the vacant light-heavyweight belt. Unfortunately, he lost the bout via unanimous decision after being outstruck for five rounds. During the post-fight interview, the 43-year-old announced his retirement from the sport. Despite the loss, Teixeira earned the Fight of the Night award for his valiant effort.
