Former UFC title challenger shares an inspiring story about Georges St-Pierre

Former UFC fighter Jake Shields recently shared a motivating story about former two-division champion Georges St-Pierre.

Shields took to Twitter to speak about the time he trained jiu-jitsu under John Danaher a few years ago in New York City. The 44-year-old said that one day, due to a snowstorm, he had to walk part of the way to reach the gym. Upon arriving at the facility, Shields found that the only other student present there was none other than St-Pierre.

Shields wrote:

"A few years ago, I was in NYC to train Jiu-Jitsu under John Danaher. A snowstorm hit so I ended up having to walk partway. When I got to the gym the only other student there was George St-Pierre. The majority will make any excuse they can to stay average"
"Some of his other well-known students like Garry Tonon and Gordon Ryan lived a two-hour drive so had a good excuse but he had close to 100 students that could have walked"

Jake Shields and Georges St-Pierre have history together in the UFC. The two welterweights locked horns at UFC 129 for the 170-pound belt. The event took place in St-Pierre's home country of Canada. 'Rush' emerged victorious that night by cruising to a unanimous decision (48-47, 50-45, and 48-47).

Georges St-Pierre is hailed by many as the greatest MMA fighter to ever grace the UFC octagon. 'Rush' also has the resume to support that claim.

During his days as a 170-pounder, St-Pierre ran through the competition, won the UFC title twice and successfully defended it nine times.

The Canadian's incredible welterweight run included victories over fighters like B.J. Penn, Matt Hughes, Carlos Condit, Johny Hendricks, Nick Diaz, Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and Dan Hardy.

St-Pierre only suffered two losses in his entire MMA career (against Matt Hughes and Matt Serra) and he avenged both of them by knocking out his opponents in the rematch.

In November 2013, the Canadian vacated the UFC title and returned after four years to challenge Michael Bisping for middleweight gold. The ring rust did not appear to affect 'Rush' as he scored a third-round submission victory against Bisping at UFC 217.
