UFC News: Former Ultimate Fighter winner, Michael Chiesa, is not happy with McGregor's lightweight title shot
Add former Ultimate Fighter Season 15 (TUF 15) winner and No. 9 ranked Michael Chiesa to the list of fighters who are upset with featherweight champ Conor McGregor’s opportunity at the 155-pound title. If McGregor emerges victorious, he will become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles in different weight classes in UFC history.
Chiesa recently voiced his opinion on ‘The Notorious One’s’ lightweight title opportunity during an interview with MMA Fighting, calling the decision ‘bullsh*t’ and claiming to feel bad for the other talented 155 pounders who have earned a legitimate shot at the title.
Chiesa is quite the lightweight prospect himself, as the 28-year-old has racked up an impressive three-fight win streak since defeating names such as Mitch Clarke, Jim Miller, and most recently Beneil Dariush via second round submission in Florida.
Chiesa was originally scheduled to throw down with fellow hot prospect Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson, however, an unfortunate injury forced the jiu-jitsu whiz to pull out of the contest.
Now Ferguson has a major opportunity in his upcoming fight with former champ Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC Mexico this Saturday, an opportunity that could possibly have been Chiesa’s had he not gotten injured.
When it comes to McGregor, however, Chiesa is happy to have the ‘big money’ come to the division, but not at the cost of being side-stepped for an opportunity he feels he has earned through his hard work:
“Do I like him being in my weight class? Yeah, because it’s a big money fight and I match up really well against him. I mean, I’d be one body-lock away from subbing him… I don’t think he’s in the right spot.
He needs to go back and do what’s right. He’s got Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis in his own weight class to deal with. So I hope Eddie puts him back down to 145, but if not, welcome to your new home, welcome to the deep waters.”
Chiesa is currently awaiting his next date for Octagon action, but as for McGregor he will meet Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 live on pay per view (PPV) from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.
