Georges St-Pierre thinks he's still in his best years but is unsure about a UFC return
Georges St-Pierre has done everything there is to do in the world of Mixed Martial Arts. He had what many consider to be the greatest career of any athlete that the sport has seen. St-Pierre held the Welterweight Championship twice and the Middleweight Championship once.
There isn't much left for him to do, and he's only fought once since he quietly retired in 2013. The only thing that he has seemingly wanted since then is a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov, purely because the Russian remains undefeated.
Georges St-Pierre spoke to Aaron Bronsteter of TSN on Wednesday (H/T MMA Junkie) and touched briefly on a possible comeback:
“Why step back in? But why not step back in?” St-Pierre said. “We only live once. That’s the question that I’m facing now, you know? If I have an opportunity to do it and all the stars align and I don’t do it – because I’ve still got it now. I’d say I’m in my best years. Will I regret, when I reach 50 years? … I don’t know."
Ultimately, Georges St-Pierre admitted that he's satisfied with his achievements and knows that it can be a death sentence for any athlete. But with regards to his UFC return, Georges St-Pierre feels like the stars need to align:
“I’m kind of satisfied [with what I’ve achieved],” St-Pierre added. “Do you know what I mean? Satisfaction for the athlete is the death. You’re done. You’re finished when you’re satisfied. In order to come back, I’m in a mental state of mind where I’m not sure. The stars would need to be aligned perfectly.”
What will bring Georges St-Pierre back to the Octagon?
GSP's performance at UFC 217 in 2017 was a perfect example of him truly being in a physical and mental state to compete inside the Octagon. He decimated Michael Bisping in Madison Square Garden and would vacate the Middleweight title shortly thereafter.
It appears as though only a bout against Khabib Nuramgomedov can motivate St-Pierre to return, but it all depends on the UFC's plans and how they negotiate a potential fight.
