Gervonta Davis announces next fight is 'canceled', but Lamont Roach releases conflicting statement

Gervonta Davis has taken to social media to claim that his next fight is now off, but his opponent seems to be in a disagreement on the matter. Davis' WBA lightweight title defense on Mar. 1, 2025, is reportedly canceled per the champ himself.

His opponent for that Q1 2025 title fight, Lamont Roach, posted videos shadow boxing and sparring Mykal Fox while responding to inquisitive fans. Roach also took to his IG story to respond to a fan asking if the fight with Davis is off and Roach questioned why people were even asking him.

The promoters of this event, PBC, have not given any updates on the matter, and tickets for Davis versus Roach are still available for purchase as of this writing. It remains to be seen if the bout will be called off or if the two will make it to the ring at the mapped-out date in Barclays Centre, Brooklyn.

Gervonta Davis and his path in the world of boxing

Gervonta Davis will be defending his lightweight hardware against the WBA super featherweight champion, with Roach being given a special exemption to keep his belt while getting this chance to become a two-division WBA champion. That WBA super featherweight strap is one previously held by Davis himself who also held the IBF strap in that weight category.

'Tank' Davis was upgraded from his status as the 'regular' titleholder to the lineal WBA lightweight champion after Devin Haney vacated the strap. The 30-year-old defended this WBA belt with an eighth-round knockout over Frank Martin in June.

Many theorized that Davis would be next up for a title unification clash with IBF titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko, with negotiations falling through in the summer. Loma opted to take some time away from the sport and not sign on for a battle against the Maryland native.
