Makhachev will take on Charles Oliveira at the main event of UFC 280 scheduled for October 22 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. This will be the Dagestani's first attempt at winning UFC gold after fighting for almost eight years in the promotion.
During a recent interview with the UFC, former lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov provided insight into what it was like growing up with Makhachev in Dagestan. 'The Eagle' detailed how the 31-year-old had a competitive spirit right from the beginning and "hated losing." The UFC Hall of Famer also revealed that Makhachev was more disciplined compared to his cousin Abubakar Nurmagomedov. Khabib Nurmagomedov said:
“He was always competitive and hated losing. Whatever martial art he competed in, he was successful. In school, I think he didn’t do bad… I had excellent marks through grade 7 then it went downhill a bit. Either way, I put effort into my education… I know he [Makhachev] wasn’t a troublemaker compared to Abubakar [Nurmagomedov]… Islam was more disciplined.”

Islam Makhachev made his UFC debut in 2015 when he faced Leo Kuntz. The 31-year-old secured a stunning win via rear-naked choke in the second round of the match. He then faced Adriano Martins at UFC 192 where he suffered the only loss of his UFC career as he was TKO'd by the Brazilian.
After the setback at UFC 192, the Dagestani fighter had an amazing run in the promotion, defeating the likes of Arman Tsarukyan, Thiago Moises and Bobby Green. Makhachev is currently on an impressive ten-fight win streak in the promotion with a professional record of 22 wins and one loss.
