"He was broken in half" - UFC veteran shares his skepticism about Conor McGregor's UFC comeback
Ŕ4With Michael Chandler now booked to rematch Charles Oliveira after two years on the sidelines waiting for a matchup with Conor McGregor, the idea of a fight between the coaches of The Ultimate Fighter 31 ever happening seems unlikely. Chael Sonnen believes that McGregor will not even return to the octagon at all.
Reacting to a recent interview of Chandler's when the former Bellator champion said he still eyes a fight with McGregor in the future, Sonnen rejected the idea. The ESPN analyst said 'The Notorious' was "broken in half" in his last fight at UFC 264 while also pointing out his financial success in the alcohol industry.
Sonnen said:
"Michael Chandler is confident Conor McGregor is gonna return. I'm not. Conor McGregor, the night he was broken in half, had to be carried out of the ring... To make things worse, he sells a whiskey company for an unbelievable sum of money and he finds himself in the movie business."
Sonnen continued:
"There's no place in the world that I've ever seen that is easier to do your job if your job is fighting than being signed to the UFC... So it's make-believe that Conor is going to fight. That's something that Chandler is clinging to... he's also clinging to the idea that he gets what he worked and sacrificed so hard for, but I am not quite so easy to fool."
Conor McGregor allegedly likes tweet saying he will not return to MMA
Potentially giving credence to Chael Sonnen's bleak statements, Conor McGregor allegedly liked a fan's tweet saying that he would never return to MMA again.
The fan made the tweet to a video of McGregor in attendance at the Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois fight card on Sept. 21. 'The Notorious' was seen walking into the arena smoking a cigar.
However, at the same event, McGregor spoke to Ariel Helwani backstage and told the reporter that he would return to the UFC in 2025. The 36-year-old recognized Michael Chandler's matchup with Charles Oliveira but said he still hopes to return against 'Iron' to settle their score.
