"He's speaking of Jon Jones as if they were best friends" - Daniel Cormier defends arch-rival against Colby Covington's 'gimmicky' trash-talk
Daniel Cormier has criticized Colby Covington's persona, branding the welterweight’s antics as a "gimmick" that is backfiring after his recent loss to Joaquin Buckley at UFC Tampa.
Covington suffered a third-round TKO defeat in the main event, prompting questions about his future in the UFC. In a video addressing the fallout, Cormier highlighted Covington's controversial behavior. Speaking of his comments on Jon Jones, he said:
“This is Colby Covington when he first started, he was on the undercard of a Jon Jones fight. He's speaking of Jon Jones as if they were best friends in college... Colby or at least it is perceived to be his feelings towards Jon Jones because he's very vocal about it he hates Jones. At least he would have you believe that. "
He added:
"But when you watch this right here, you can see what his true feelings were before the gimmick. This was before Colby became that guy, the bad guy: the guy that talks and the guy that's very vocal and brash and harsh.”

Colby Covington fires back at Jon Jones for recent comments following UFC Tampa loss
Colby Covington has responded with fiery words after UFC superstar Jon Jones took a dig at him on X. Following Jones’ mockery of Covington’s performance, Covington fired back with a blunt and personal retort, calling Jones a “horrible fighter” and dismissing his taunts.
Covington wasn’t holding back in his response. In a social media video, he clapped back, “F*ck Jon Jones,” before launching into a more detailed attack:
“He wishes he had these kind of looks and was this beautiful and had this much respect. He has no respect, he lost all his respect when he started doing drugs and started hitting pregnant ladies. There is nothing to respect about Jon. He’s cheated his whole career, cheated on his wife, cheated on his taxes. He’s a terrible person.”
