"He still made $40+ million" - Chael Sonnen sheds light on Tyson Fury's "wild" claims about Francis Ngannou fight purse
Chael Sonnen recently voiced his opinion about the amount of money Tyson Fury claims he made from his Francis Ngannou fight. Sonnen couldn't stand in agreement with the figures that Fury presented.
Fury has climbed to the top tier of the boxing world both in terms of accolades and payouts. Apart from being the former WBC heavyweight champ and holding a 34-2-1 record, he is also one of the most popular boxers of the current era.
Fury locked horns with Ngannou in October 2023 preceding his duology with Oleksandr Usyk. He also got his hand raised via a controversial split decision at the end of the encounter.
But Sonnen objected to the ambiguous "£50 million" ($62.8 M) fight purse that Fury reportedly claimed he earned from his fight against Ngannou.
In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Sonnen accepted that Fury makes staggering amounts of money from his fights. But he also implied that 'The Gypsy King' often exaggerates the figures like he did for his fight with Ngannou. 'The American Gangster' said:
"Fury fought Francis Ngannou, and Fury, like other boxers, wildly lied about how much money he made. But he still made $40+ million. I know, I’d like to tell you guys [that it’s] 80 and 90 [million dollars]. But he still made real money."

How much did Tyson Fury earn for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk?
Chael Sonnen's aforementioned words indicate that it's a tough ask to determine the exact amount of money boxers take home from their fights. However, looking at Fury's stature, it can be safely said that he would have made a whopping amount of cash from his recently concluded rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury or his associates are yet to come up with an official announcement about their earnings from the Usyk rematch. However, several reports have presented an estimate of what the English native might have pocketed from the encounter.
A report from Marca mentions that the total fight purse allocated for the Usyk vs. Fury rematch was $190 million. It also reveals that Fury walked away with 45% of the total fight purse, meaning he made more than $90 million from the fight.
