"I always loved you and always wanted the best for you" - Floyd Mayweather talks about his bond with Devin Haney and latter's recent remarks about him
Floyd Mayweather recently weighed in on his relationship with Devin Haney amid the ongoing rift involving the WBC super lightweight champion and his father.
Earlier this week, tensions escalated between Mayweather and Bill Haney in a heated altercation after his son's stunning loss to Ryan Garcia. 'The Dream' suffered his first professional career defeat after being knocked down three times by Garcia, ultimately losing by a majority decision.
Despite the loss, Haney retained his belt since 'KingRy' missed the divisional weight limit by 3.2 pounds, rendering him ineligible to claim the title. Mayweather extended congratulations to Garcia over the phone for his victory but later engaged in a profanity-laden dispute with Haney's father.
Haney Sr. boldly proclaimed that the boxing world was now in the "Devin Haney era," suggesting that a sparring session between Haney and Mayweather played a role in the boxing icon's decision to retire.
During a recent interview with FightHype.com (via Michael Benson on X), 'Money' clarified that despite any misunderstandings, his intentions were consistently positive and focused on aiding Haney's success:
"I will always talk good about Devin. Devin is young, so I expect him to say, 'Floyd, you're hating on me.' No, Devin, I always loved you and always wanted the best for you. If I don't f**k with you, I'm not showing you different moves in the gym… I guess he thought I sent the [Gervonta Davis] sparring video to Ryan Garcia. Did he get it from me? Absolutely not."

Mayweather had previously taken 'The Dream' under his wing for training, but they parted ways after some time. Haney has often voiced his dissatisfaction with Mayweather and accused the former undefeated boxer of leaking an old sparring video with Davis to help Garcia in their fight.
Floyd Mayweather blasts Devin Haney for his game plan against Ryan Garcia
During the same interview with FightHype.com, Floyd Mayweather strongly criticized Devin Haney for his strategy during the fight against Ryan Garcia. 'Money' conveyed his lack of admiration for Haney's abilities and emphasized that the WBC super lightweight champion still has much to improve upon:
"For starters, he gotta turn his shots to get the power. You can’t be shooting your jabs like this. Amateurs do this. When you are a professional, we here, boom boom. In the eleventh round, when [Devin] got knocked down, he didn’t see the shot coming. So, it’s a lot of things that have to be taught to him."
