“I don’t see the fight as a revenge” - Mayssa Bastos says Danielle Kelly’s win over teammate Jessa Khan serves no motivation
ONE world title challenger and multi-time BJJ world champion Mayssa Bastos of Brazil maintains she isn't out for revenge, even after upcoming opponent Danielle Kelly defeated her teammate Jessa Khan just last year.
Kelly scored a unanimous decision victory over Khan at ONE Fight Night 14 on Prime Video last September 2023 to capture the inaugural ONE women's atomweight submission grappling world title.
Khan and Bastos are teammates at Art of Jiu-Jitsu Academy, and Kelly believes the two are working together to develop a game plan against her.
Speaking to ONE Championship in a recent interview, Bastos says that Kelly's victory over Khan doesn't bother her, and that she isn't seeking any sort of vengeance.
The 26-year-old Brazilian star said:
"We [Khan and I] didn't really talk but I don't think we have a problem, like we're fine, and that's it."
Bastos added:
"I don’t see the fight as a revenge. Like they had their fight. Now it’s my turn to fight, like it’s a different fight. So not revenge."
Bastos is a five-time BJJ world champion and one of the most decorated female competitors in the world today. She joined the world's largest martial arts organization in March, debuting with a unanimous decision over Kanae Yamada.
Now, she has the chance to capture the gold.
