"I knew it was my moment" - Gustavo Balart says MMA transition came naturally after Olympic wrestling stint
Gustavo Balart once reached the pinnacle of his sport when he represented his country Cuba in Greco-Roman wrestling in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. As big of a career achievement that was, 'El Gladiador' always knew he was destined for more in his martial arts journey.
MMA, of course, seems to be a natural transition for elite wrestlers and Balart knew he'd excel in the field if he'd give it his full and undivided attention.
In an exclusive interview with ONE Championship, the 37-year-old reflected on how it all began for him.
"When I came back from the Olympics and they started the 125-pound division, I knew it was my moment. I decided to dedicate 100 percent of my time to mixed martial arts."
Gustavo Balart soon packed his bags and chased a dream that took him to the United States of America.
While being away from his loved ones was tough, the Cuban athlete endured homesickness and eventually earned himself a place in the world's largest martial arts organization.
His persistence certainly paid off, as Balart will now have the opportunity to compete for 26 pounds of gold in the main event of ONE Fight Night 24 this coming Friday.
On August 2, live in US Primetime from Bangkok's iconic Lumpinee Stadium, the American Top Team standout will tussle with former champ Jarred Brooks for the interim strawweight MMA world title.
Gustavo Balart shares why fans easily connect with him
Gustavo Balart admits people have looked down on him for most of his life. The 4-foot-11 Cuban pocket-rocket, though, never lets his physical shortcomings hold him back one bit.
As such, Balart fully embraces being a role model for fans who are inspired by his valiant battles to overcome adversity.
'El Gladiador' told ONE:
"I am aggressive, always going forward, always looking forward to the fight and that is exciting for [the fans]. I never give up despite the disadvantages I face sometimes."
ONE Fight Night 24 is free for Prime Video subscribers in North America.
