“I like challenges” - Two-sport lightweight king Regian Eersel says he’d entertain a mixed-rules fight
Regian Eersel truly enjoys good challenges, and it isn't limited to only striking.
The Surinamese superstar recently reclaimed his spot as the two-sport kingpin in ONE Championship, after defeating Alexis Nicolas in the main event of ONE Fight Night 25 earlier this month, and he's ready for more.
With that fact, he's got a lot of options in his hands, among others to defend his Muay Thai belt or to go on a trilogy with Nicolas after he got his kickboxing belt back.
Nonetheless, there is one more area he would like to explore, and that is the special rules matchup that the promotion had entertained before.
'The Immortal' shared that intention during the post-fight interviews of ONE Fight Night 25, when asked about the possibility of him embarking on mixed martial arts:
"No, not an MMA fight. But I can do a mixed rules fight. Not MMA, it takes more preparation and it's not one of my goals."
Regian Eersel does have a reason for that, as he continued:
"What's most exciting about a mixed rules fight is you can fight [in] almost all of the disciplines. And it's a challenge. I like challenges. I like this challenge, so we have to challenge ourselves, that's why we're here."
Regian Eersel hopes to firm up his legacy as a legendary striker
Rather than just reclaiming the ONE lightweight kickboxing belt from Alexis Nicolas, two-sport ONE world champion Regian Eersel sees this fight as an opportunity to push his legacy as a renowned fighter.
Eersel had said this to ONE Championship before he went victorious in his clash with Nicolas:
"Oh yeah, what my feeling are for this rematch, but yeah. To add this to my legacy, you know, like I said before, if I win, this will build a bigger legacy for myself. People, you know, you lose in life but it's not how you lose, it's how you recover from losing, you know."
