“I prepared myself” - Regian Eersel says he knew he couldn’t stay unbeaten forever
Regian Eersel anticipated that his undefeated run in ONE Championship would eventually come to an end.
In April 2018, Eersel made his ONE Championship debut, defeating Brad Riddell by decision in kickboxing. Since then, the Suriname-born striker has become one of the greatest fighters in promotional history by becoming a former 5x lightweight kickboxing world champion and current 3x lightweight Muay Thai world champion.
Earlier this year, Eersel endured his lone promotional setback due to a surprising unanimous decision kickboxing defeat against Alexis Nicolas. During an interview with ONE, 'The Immortal' had this to say about knowing the day would come for him to lose:
"I was eight years undefeated. But I knew this day would come, but I didn't know it was, you know, that quick. But, you know, I prepared myself for this day and the day has come, you know, and, you know, it's not like the world is going to end or something like that, you know, it's just a loss."
Regian Eersel claimed in a previous interview that he regained his hunger due to the loss against Alexis Nicolas. Luckily for Eersel, he has an opportunity to avenge his defeat in an instant rematch against the undefeated Frenchman.
Alexis Nicolas plans to extend undefeated run in rematch against Regian Eersel
At 26 years old, Alexis Nicolas holds a lifetime record of 24-0, including two wins under the ONE Championship banner. Later this week, 'Barboza' has an opportunity to strengthen his resume with another win against Regian Eersel.
Nicolas and Eersel will meet again in Friday's ONE Fight Night 25 main event. Eersel looks to get back on track and reestablish himself as a two-sport world champion, while Nicolas plans to silence any doubters questioning his first win against 'The Immortal.'
The ONE lightweight kickboxing world title rematch will take place inside the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. ONE Fight Night 25 can be seen live and for free on October 4 by North American and Canadian viewers with an active Amazon Prime Video subscription.
