Woodley's career in the UFC has seen him achieve notable success. He claimed the UFC Welterweight Championship in a thrilling knockout victory over Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 in July 2016, earning him the Performance of the Night bonus. His first title defense against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205 resulted in a majority draw and an additional Fight of the Night bonus. Woodley secured a majority decision win in the rematch with Thompson at UFC 209.
Continuing his championship reign, Woodley defended his welterweight title against Demian Maia at UFC 214, winning by unanimous decision despite fighting with a torn labrum. He then submitted Darren Till at UFC 228 to retain his title and received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in the octagon. However, his championship run came to an end when he faced Kamaru Usman at UFC 235, losing via unanimous decision.
Woodley's last octagon appearances include a first-round submission loss to Vicente Luque at UFC 260, which earned him the Fight of the Night accolade.
Following his UFC contract fulfillment, he transitioned to professional boxing, taking on Jake Paul in August 2021 and engaging in a competitive split decision loss.
Not deterred by setbacks, Woodley sought a rematch against Jake Paul in December 2021 but was ultimately knocked out in the sixth round. Despite these challenges, Woodley's passion for competition remains evident, as he now declares his readiness to return to fighting.
With Chael Sonnen lending his support, Woodley's future in combat sports remains intriguing. As fans await news of his next move, it is clear that Woodley's determination to compete at the highest level remains undiminished.
Chael Sonnen questions UFC for bringing back the BMF belt
Following Jorge Masvidal's retirement, the BMF belt will be on the line in a rematch between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje at UFC 291.
Appearing on his YouTube channel, ‘The American Gangster, ’ Chael Sonnen questioned the purpose of the BMF belt:
“I told you one day, 24 hours after we tore that cage down at Madison Square Garden...The Rock got on a plane, the president got on a plane...I told you then the BMF title would never be defended, didn’t I? And the BMF champion fought, fought again, fought again, but he never defended the title, did he? And now he has vacated the title, and now that title is going to be fought for...why?”
