“I’ve trained every day” - Jonathan Haggerty reveals he’s barely taken a day off since losing gold to Superlek in Denver
Following his brutal knockout loss to Superlek at ONE 168: Denver, Jonathan Haggerty got right back to work in the gym.
Last month, 'The General' headed to 'The Mile High City' for a high-stakes clash with Superlek in one of the most anticipated Muay Thai headliners in ONE Championship history.
Fans were expecting to see two of the sport's most decorated strikers go toe-to-toe for five rounds. Instead, things ended in the opening minute after Superlek landed a picture-perfect inside elbow as Haggerty moved in.
Unable to recover, the bout was called off and Superlek became a two-sport ONE world champion, adding the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title to a collection that already included the ONE flyweight kickboxing crown.
During a recent appearance on the Sky Sports MMA Club podcast, 'The General' revealed that outside of a couple of days immediately following the fight, he hasn't taken any time off from training:
"I’ve trained every day since my last fight apart from the first two days after it," Haggerty said. "I’m still in the gym, still working on myself."
Jonathan Haggerty disappointed by quick KO loss against 'The Kicking Machine'
Understandably, Jonathan Haggerty was left devastated and disappointed by the loss.
Looking back on the loss, 'The General' revealed that the most disappointing aspect of the defeat was not being able to show the world what he had worked on while simultaneously sacrificing precious time with his friends and family to train:
"I wanted to perform the best I could and that was the hardest part, really. Knowing how hard I really trained, me and my coach, the time he's taken out from his family, myself, my girlfriend. We took a lot of time out to dedicate our craft for this fight.
"That was the hard part, just not being able to show what we were going in there to do and getting caught so early."
Perhaps Haggerty will one day get the chance to run it back with Superlek. Until then, 'The General' still has the ONE bantamweight kickboxing world championship to defend.
