Islam Makhachev now holds a promotional record after UFC 284 that no one is talking about
Islam Makhachev's first successful title defense versus Alexander Volkanovski has set a seriously impressive record in the UFC.
Fans and fighters around the world were left stunned after the final bell rung in UFC 284's main event. Makhachev and Volkanovski went the distance in what was an epic back-and-forth contest.
The Russian champion surprised everyone once again with his stand-up display, whereas 'The Great' backed up almost every word he uttered during the pre-fight buildup by being almost impossible to keep down.
Makhachev ultimately his hand raised via unanimous decision, but the fight was much closer than the scorecards suggested in the eyes of many. With the victory, Islam Makhachev earned his first title defense.
In addition, he took over a win-streak record his opponent previously held.
Makhachev's win saw him snap Alexander Volkanovski's 12-fight winning run in the UFC and extend his own to 12. With that, the Russian champion now currently holds the record for the longest active win streak in the UFC.
The promotion wrote on Twitter:
"Islam Makhachev now holds the longest active win streak in the UFC with 12 straight victories! #UFC284"
Although Volkanovski came up short, the stock of both men has skyrocketed amongst the MMA community. The pair also earned a Fight of the Night bonus for their contest, which is already being dubbed a 2023 Fight of the Year contender.
