Islam Makhachev's words twisted by the media claims Ali Abdelaziz, says fight with Alex Volkanovski at UFC 284 is trending
Islam Makhachev recently bemoaned the UFC's efforts in promoting his upcoming title fight with Alexander Volkanovski.
The lightweight champion believes that more press conferences could have been held across the world to build the hype for UFC 284, which will be headlined by Makhachev vs. Volkanovski. However, the Dagestani's manager, Ali Abdelaziz, took to Twitter to blast the MMA media.
Abdelaziz accused the media of twisting Makhachev's words about the lack of promotional hype surrounding next weekend's pay-per-view card. He stated that the fight is trending globally and that it will bring in the "biggest gate ever in Australia":
"Media always twist fighters words. @MAKHACHEVMMA ready to go. His fight is trending, it will be one of the biggest fights & biggest gate in ever in Australia. The belt is coming back to Dagestan."
Islam Makhachev will enter the fight as a -300 favorite, and his overwhelming grappling ability is difficult to look past. However, among MMA pundits and experts, there is an underlying feeling that if any current fighter in the UFC is able to beat Makhachev, it is likely Alexander Volkanovski.
The 2022 Fighter of the Year is unbeaten in the UFC and had the performance of his career against future Hall of Famer Max Holloway at UFC 276 in his previous bout.
'The Great' is moving up to lightweight to chase double-champ status, while Islam Makhachev is vying to overtake Volkanovski as the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC.
Henry Cejudo believes that Islam Makhachev vs. Alex Volkanovski deserves more hype
Henry Cejudo believes that UFC 284's main event is a "super fight" and deserves more media coverage than it has received. The two best pound-for-pound fighters in the promotion will go head-to-head next weekend and both men are confident they will succeed.
Islam Makhachev has been touted as "Khabib Nurmagomedov 2.0", as the lightweight champion combines his elite Sambo grappling with underrated striking to create an unstoppable force.
Meanwhile, Alexander Volkanovski has dismantled his last three opponents, who are regarded as world-class martial artists, being Max Holloway, Brian Ortega and 'The Korean Zombie'.
Henry Cejudo believes that this matchup is as good as it gets for MMA fans and doesn't understand the lack of media coverage. 'Triple C' tweeted:
"Islam Makhachev vs Alexander Volkanovski deserves WAY more HYPE! This is the No. 1 vs No. 2 pound-for-pound in the sport. The man they call the next Khabib vs the greatest 145er in history. This SUPERFIGHT deserves your attention!"
