“It's a good overwhelming feeling” - Nico Cornejo overloaded with emotions heading into Adrian Lee war
ONE Championship newcomer Nico Cornejo is overwhelmed with emotion ahead of his highly anticipated promotional debut.
After earning back-to-back wins on the regional scene in Colorado, 'The Steel City Kid' will head to The Mile High City for his toughest test yet. On Friday, September 6, Cornejo will face unbeaten 18-year-old sensation Adrian Lee at ONE 168: Denver.
It will be the biggest opportunity of Cornejo's young career and one he's undoubtedly excited about—if not a little overwhelmed. During his recent interview with MMA UK, Cornejo made it clear that the overwhelming feeling he'll likely carry into fight night is a good one and not something to be concerned with.
"It's an overwhelming feeling," Cornejo said. "But it's a good overwhelming feeling for sure."
As an amateur, Nico Cornejo went 5-0, with two of his wins coming by way of knockout. He carried that momentum into his pro career, earning a pair of highlight-reel finishes under the Battle MMA Championship and Colorado Combat Club banners.
Nico Cornejo has his work cut out for him against Adrian Lee at ONE 168: Denver
Standing in Nico Cornejo's way of a big win in his ONE debut is Adrian Lee, one of MMA's most highly-touted prospects.
After a stellar amateur career that saw him win the 2023 Hawaii High School State Wrestling Title, Lee made his pro-MMA debut in June, squaring off with Antonio Mammarella at ONE 167 in Bangkok.
Though it may have taken Lee a little longer than he'd hoped, the teen phenom secured a second-round submission over the Italian standout.
Will he bag a second-straight win and keep his 'O' intact, or will 'The Steel City Kid' spoil Lee's sophomore appearance and introduce himself on martial arts' biggest global stage?
