"It's nothing but a blessing" - Jackie Buntan willing to embrace the burden that comes from being a top athlete in combat sports
ONE Muay Thai star Jackie Buntan is more than happy to shoulder the responsibility of being viewed as an important figure in the growing prominence of women in combat sports.
In an interview with the world's largest martial arts promotion, the Filipino-American said:
"Some people can view it as a burden and I view it as a blessing. Everything I've hoped and prayed for has come to fruition so far. Being one of the best in the world has come into fruition for me, so it's nothing but a blessing."
After tearing up the regional amateur Muay Thai scene in North America, Buntan made her professional and promotional debut at ONE: Fists of Fury in February 2021, where she outclassed Nat 'Wondergirl' Jaroonsak. She subsequently won her next two bouts.
Buntan then fought Smilla Sundell in April 2022 over the inaugural ONE women's strawweight Muay Thai crown, but ultimately fell short despite a stirring effort.
The Boxing Works standout responded to the heartbreaking loss by going undefeated in her next three outings, earmarked by a thrilling unanimous decision win over Martine Michieletto this past March.
She will now face Anissa Meksen for the inaugural ONE women's strawweight kickboxing world championship at ONE 169: Malykhin vs. 'Reug Reug' on Friday, Nov. 8, inside the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Jackie Buntan warns Anissa Meksen from underestimating her
Jackie Buntan's confidence is at an all-time high entering ONE 169, which prompted her to issue a stern warning against Anissa Meksen ahead of their world title clash.
Speaking with ONE, the 27-year-old stated:
"I know I'm just as good. I know she hasn't fought anybody like me. Stylistically, we're both at the top as combat sport athletes, both females."
