"It's one of the best things" - Regian Eersel's candid take on exacting revenge vs Alexis Nicolas at ONE Fight Night 25
Sometimes, revenge isn't as sweet as it seems. However, two-sport ONE world champion Regian Eersel begs to differ.
'The Immortal' reclaimed his ONE lightweight kickboxing world title from the very man who took his gold away earlier this year, Alexis Nicolas. He achieve the feat in the main event of the promotion's return to the revered Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, last Friday, Oct. 4.
After feeling that he was undone by the judges' decision during their first encounter at ONE Fight Night 21 in April this year, the Surinamese warrior dished out a typical striking clinic that he's known for to claim the unanimous decision.
During the post-event press conference, Regian Eersel bared his emotions on acing his rematch against the Frenchman inside the Mecca of Muay Thai:
"I'm very satisfied. It's one of the best things. So yeah, I'm very happy."
The Sityodtong Amsterdam athlete's win over the Parisian moved him back into the winner's column and made him a two-sport world champion again. At the same time, the ONE lightweight Muay Thai and kickboxing world champion pushed his promotional slate to 11-1.
Regian Eersel wants to 'enjoy this victory' before any talk about a next fight
While many would love to see Regian Eersel make a quick turnaround, the Netherlands-based warrior is keen to take some time off to focus on life outside of martial arts.
In the same presser, the Sityodtong Amsterdam man added:
"First, I'm going to enjoy this victory, then we will talk about my next opponent."
Whether or not he makes a quick turnaround and features in a blockbuster matchup this year remains to be seen.
But if there are any interesting fights to make for the Surinamese striker at the minute, two names stand head and shoulders above the lengthy list of challengers.
Russian striker Dmitry Menshikov is eager to pull one back over 'The Immortal' after succumbing to a quick knockout in their ONE lightweight Muay Thai world title duel last year. He's turned his fortunes around with three back-to-back highlight-reel finishes since.
Meanwhile, Youssef Assouik debuted with a stunning win over his nemesis and world title challenger Sinsamut Klinmee at ONE Fight Night 25. The win could immediately push him into the world title picture down the road.
