"It is very unusual"- Chael Sonnen takes a surprising stance on Jorge Masvidal’s UFC return "regardless of ongoing spat"

Chael Sonnen recently took a surprising stance on Jorge Masvidal for announcing his UFC return. Despite their differences, he noted that he would be interested in seeing the former 'BMF' title holder return to the octagon.

'Gamebred's' most recent MMA bout took place at UFC 287 last April, where he lost a unanimous decision to Gilbert Burns. It was his fourth consecutive loss, following a unanimous decision to former teammate Colby Covington and back-to-back title losses to Kamaru Usman. Since retiring, Masvidal competed in a boxing bout against former foe Nate Diaz, which he lost via majority decision.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, 'The American Gangster' weighed in on the 40-year-old announcing his octagon return and who his opponent should be. Sonnen mentioned that he believes Masvidal will fight, but suggested that Leon Edwards should be his opponent because of their animosity:

"It is very unusual, it would be a massive sign of respect if Jorge Masvidal was able to get a contract done... Regardless of an ongoing spat I have with Jorge, I would like if he came back. That would be good news... It happened to come out side-by-side with an announcement the UFC had made about Leon [Edwards]... My first thought is if Leon is back and without an opponent and if Masvidal is back... It would seem like we just solved each other's problems." [1:22]

Chael Sonnen casts doubt on Jorge Masvidal receiving more than one opportunity by the UFC

In addition to sharing his thoughts on Jorge Masvidal announcing his UFC return, Chael Sonnen cast doubt on the 40-year-old receiving more than one opportunity by the promotion.

In the aforementioned video, Sonnen mentioned that Masvidal's losing skid, age, and likely opponent options make it difficult for him to get back in the win column or even fight more than once should he lose his return bout:

"You're still going to be in there with a hammer who you're very unlikely to beat and I tell the story that way... Not actually because of Jorge [Masvidal] and I's thing... The UFC only puts on significant fights, that's it... When we already have the deck stacked against him... It's wildly difficult to believe that if he were to lose that he would get yet another fight." [5:45]
