Jackie Buntan defines what a true Californian really is: “They're not in the water”

Filipina-American striking star and former ONE world title challenger Jackie Buntan is proud of her roots. She is a second-generation Filipino immigrant who was born and raised in sunny California, which she believes gives her a distinct culture. For one, she brings together the best of both sides of the world.

However, Buntan believes that not everyone who claims to be from California is actually who they say they are. The 27-year-old Boxing Works representative has a unique way of determining if someone is a local from the area.

She told ONE Championship in a recent interview what she thinks makes a true Californian:

"Every weekend, I’m at the beach. Some people think, ‘Oh, you’re actually in the water.’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m just on top, in the parking lot, walking around.’"

Buntan added:

"I think most people around here, when you go to the beach, you’re going to the beach, but you’re not going in the actual water. And, to me, I think that’s kind of how you know if they’re local or not, is that they’re not in the water. ‘Cause anybody local here knows the water’s gonna be way too cold."

Needless to say, Buntan is excited to represent both the Philippines and California when she steps back into the Circle.
