Janet Todd recalls ‘warming up’ with MMA legend
Janet Todd remembers the surreal moment of warming up alongside flyweight great Demetrious Johnson.
‘JT’ may be one of the best female fighters in the world and has two ONE world championships to prove it, but even she gets starstruck from time to time. That’s exactly what happened to Todd when she found herself getting ready for a fight in the same room as one of the greatest fighters of all time:
“I’m just here for the ride,” Todd said in an interview with the South China Morning Post. “For the Japan fight, [I fought] later in the day. It was still around noon. It was a double card. I fought in the morning one and I was in the same warm-up area as [Demetrious Johnson] and I was like ‘Oh, wow. This is who I am warming up with.’”
The event Janet Todd referenced in her comments was ONE: Century Part 1. Emanating from Tokyo, Demetrious Johnson defeated Danny Kingad to win the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix championship. That same night, ‘JT’ earned a unanimous decision victory over Belarusian beauty Ekaterina Vandaryeva.
On Friday night, Janet Todd will attempt to get into the win column once again as she unifies her interim gold with the returning ONE atomweight Muay Thai world champion Allycia Hellen Rodrigues at ONE Fight Night 8 on Prime Video.
All ONE Fight Night events are broadcast live and for free in North America via Prime Video.
Janet Todd would love to share the spotlight with Demetrious Johnson at ONE Fight Night 10
In just a few short weeks, ONE Championship will head to the United States for the very first time as they invade the 1stBank Center in Colorado for ONE Fight Night 10. The event is scheduled to be headlined by a ONE flyweight world title trilogy bout as reigning titleholder Demetrious Johnson defends against former flyweight champion Adriano Moraes.
While Janet Todd is focused on getting a big win against Allycia Hellen Rodrigues this Friday night, the American admitted that she would love the chance to compete at the promotion’s historic event. It all depends on how things turn out this weekend in her co-main event clash with Rodrigues.
“That will all probably depend on the condition that I am in after this fight. But I would love to be on an American card, especially since I’m an American. I won’t have to deal with jet lag and the 17-hour flights. I would love to be in an American show.”
Amazon Prime Video subscribers in North America can catch ONE Fight Night 8 live and for free in U.S. primetime.
