Joe Rogan helps Jelly Roll navigate his battle with Imposter Syndrome: "If you pay attention to it, you're going to go blind"
Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Jelly Roll recently made an appearance at the Joe Rogan Experience. One of the most revealing and interesting bits of the podcast was when Jelly Roll opened up about suffering from Imposter Syndrome even at the height of his career.
When asked by Joe Rogan if he ever feels Imposter Syndrome, Jelly Roll said (1:51):
"Oh man, so much. I'm somewhere between feeling extremely uncomfortable where I'm at in my career right now or overly comfortable where I'm out of my career. So I'm either having to catch myself and go 'Woah, big fella. Come on now, dog. You were just in jail [a few years ago]. People that knew you six years aho hate you still'. You know what I'm saying? [Laughs] And then I have situations where I'm like, 'I don't belong here'. I'm having that moment right now."
Jelly Roll (born Jason Bradley DeFord) then confessed that with his new album being in contention for the No.1 album of the year, his Imposter Syndrome is stronger than ever. To this, Rogan offered his thoughts, saying (2:36):
"Do you think that's maybe something that you shouldn't even think about? Coz like, your music is amazing. You're amazing. Maybe all that, just let it exist...Coz it's so big now, it's almost like if you pay attention to it you're going to go blind. You know what I'm saying? You're kind of staring at the sun."
Rogan advised Jelly Roll to just be himself and feel grateful for how far he's come. Looking and paying attention too much to how big his career has become might make it too overwhelming to realize.

Jelly Rolls gets emotional with Joe Rogan discussing his 100-pound weight loss journey
Jelly Roll then talks about how his unlikely journey to the top - together with a few other artists who were considered underdogs in the industry - inspired him to get healthier. Being on the heavier side of the scale, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter decided to lose weight by simply eating healthy and getting more active by taking walks and playing basketball.
Jelly Roll said (5:43):
"I'm down a hundred pounds now. Officially down a hundred f*cking pounds...It's been all food. I'm working out, I'm walking. But what I've is as I'm losing the weight, it's inspiring me to just [keep going]. By nature I want to go walk and do more stuff coz I'm f*cking, I'm lighter...We're playing basketball three days a week now."
Jelly Roll became emotional when he talked about how his band and crew decided to join him every week to play basketball. The support is so immense that Jelly Roll and his friends would have basketball tournaments for the amount of people who show up for him. This act of humanity is truly inspiring.
