Jon Anik points out opponent that 'makes sense' for Tony Ferguson's next UFC bout should he return
Jon Anik recently weighed in on Tony Ferguson's recent loss to Michael Chiesa at UFC on ABC 7 this past Saturday and named a potential opponent should the promotion grant him another opportunity. The 40-year-old laid one glove down in the octagon during his post-fight interview but noted that he was reluctant to retire.
'El Cucuy's' first-round submission loss to Chiesa was his eighth consecutive loss and contested at 170 pounds, which was the same weight division he won 'The Ultimate Fighter' at. The former interim lightweight champion is at a unique crossroads in his career as he is still beloved and popular enough to generate interest for a card, but has stated that he loves the UFC.
During his appearance on Submission Radio, the UFC commentator named veteran lightweight Joe Lauzon as a potential opponent that would be logical should the promotion give 'El Cucuy' another chance. Anik mentioned that Ferguson has never fought the former 'TUF' competitor and believes it would make sense, considering their current situation. He said:
"I was Googling Joe Lauzon to make sure that he never fought Tony Ferguson because, as I sit here and think about opponents that might make sense for Tony to try to realize some sort of success, Joe Lauzon still has fights left on his contract and, for whatever reason, hasn't competed, but I think that fight makes some sense." MMA coach Ray Longo believes Tony Ferguson should be allowed to continue his career
Tony Ferguson's future as an active fighter has been discussed by many in the MMA community after he suffered his eighth consecutive loss.
On a recent episode of Jon Anik's Anik & Florian Podcast, MMA coach Ray Longo was the latest to weigh in and mentioned that Ferguson should be able to decide whether or not he still wants to compete. He said:
"Who are we to take that away from him? Right. I mean, I think it happens every day in every line of work. So, on that end, you know, if you could deal with the internal problems and kind of destroying your legacy for money, then that's his decision to make."
