Kamaru Usman eyes pound-for-pound superfight vs Islam Makhachev, believes he’s earned shot at welterweight gold
Kamaru Usman recently secured a unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley at UFC Atlanta. After the fight, Usman showed confidence moving forward for a welterweight title while giving his thoughts on a potential fight with Islam Makhachev.
Makhchev is now in the UFC welterweight division and aiming to be a two-division champion. He is currently tied up in a championship fight against Jack Della Maddalena.
While speaking at the post-fight press conference for UFC Atlanta, Usman spoke on the importance and potential of a fight with Makhachev, saying:
"Absolutely [I want the title shot next]... Let’s be honest, I’m the biggest in the division, and this is about entertainment; the UFC is an entertainment company. You want to make the biggest fight, it’s gonna be the winner of [Jack Della Maddalena] vs. Islam [Makhachev]."
He added:
"If Islam pulls that one out, the former pound-for-pound vs the current pound-for-pound, who doesn’t pay for that?"
