Key and Peele's hilarious 'religious fighter' character finds its real-life version in Yoel Romero, 'Soldier of God' shares clip
Former Olympic silver medalist and veteran UFC fighter Yoel Romero recently shared a video clip from a popular comedy show called Key & Peele. The clip in question features actor Keegan-Michael Key, who is believed by some to be mimicking Romero's persona. In the sketch, Key portrays a devout mixed martial artist who trash-talks his opponent in a religious manner, while sporting a cross around his neck.
The comedic skit seems to draw inspiration from Romero's public image as a devout Christian and outspoken fighter. The actor's portrayal of a pious combatant engaging in verbal sparring with his opponent is reminiscent of the ' The Soldier of God's approach to his fights. The use of a cross as a prop further emphasizes the religious theme of the sketch and could be seen as a nod to Romero's faith.
The comical video was initially released by Abe Kawa, the younger brother of Yoel Romero's manager Malki Kawa, who remarked:
"If the religious dude doesn’t remind you of @YoelRomeroMMA then, I don’t know who would. The other dude is probably Kevin lee or Kevin Holland."
Key & Peele, abbreviated K&P, is a Comedy Central improv comedy television show produced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
