Liam Harrison says he’s hoping to rebook Floyd Mayweather fight when he’s fully healed
Liam Harrison is hoping for another opportunity to compete against undefeated boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather once he’s fully healed from knee surgery.
‘The Hitman’ was approached for an exhibition bout with Mayweather at the O2 Arena in London earlier this year. Unfortunately, Harrison has already scheduled a much-needed knee surgery. Despite his willingness to postpone the surgery to partake in the unique opportunity, Harrison was forced to withdraw, leaving Mayweather to contend with MTV reality star-turned-boxer Aaron Chalmers.
In an interview with The MMA Superfan, Liam Harrison hopes that he has the chance to rebook a fight with Mayweather once he has recovered from his surgery and is ready to resume full-time training.
“I just thought that it’s not gonna be a sensible option for me to take this fight, as amazing as it would’ve been. But yeah who knows? It might happen again in the future. Maybe I can do it, well I’ve been rehabbing my leg and it's healing now.”
The three-time Muay Thai world champion’s last appearance inside the circle came at ONE on Prime Video 1 in August. Stepping into the co-main event spotlight, ‘The Hitman’ challenged ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world titleholder Nong-O Hama. Things did not go well for Harrison, who suffered a first-round leg kick TKO just past the two-minute mark.
Liam Harrison shares his thoughts on Floyd Mayweather’s “exhibition” bouts
Following his 2017 defeat over Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather officially retired from professional boxing at 50-0. The following year, ‘Money’ began his exhibition world tour. Mayweather has competed against YouTubers, reality TV stars, and the athletes of RIZIN FF. More times than not, Mayweather has finished his opponents in these spectacles, making the term “exhibition” a little suspect in the eyes of Liam Harrison.
“Let’s say ‘exhibition bout’ is not an exhibition because I see what he does during these exhibitions. He knocks ‘em flat out. He’s beating up everyone in these exhibitions.”
Regardless of your opinion on Mayweather’s exhibition endeavors, the boxing icon garners attention everywhere he goes. That attention lands on the men he chooses to compete with inside the squared circle. That recognition could go a long way for fighters who are still looking to break through to an American audience.
