Mayssa Bastos breaks down what drove her to stunning upset of Danielle Kelly at ONE Fight Night 24
Mayssa Bastos is still riding high from her title-winning performance.
The eight-time BJJ world champion added another accolade to her impressive resume in the ONE Fight Night 24 co-main event, earning a unanimous decision victory over Danielle Kelly to claim the ONE submission grappling world title.
Up until that moment, Kelly had looked practically unbeatable inside the Circle, but an aggressive approach and a late-match rally allowed Bastos to pull ahead on the scorecards and make ONE Championship history.
Speaking with Sportskeeda MMA following her big win, Bastos offered some thoughts on how she managed to score the upset on martial arts' biggest global stage.
"I think I was chasing a lot," Bastos said. "I think I had a lot of catches too. And that final catch, [was just my finishing touch]."
With the win over Kelly, Mayssa Bastos became ONE's first-ever submission grappling world champion from Brazil. Now, the only question that remains is, what's next for the promotion's new atomweight queen?
Danielle Kelly already eyeing a rematch with Mayssa Bastos
After some time to process the loss, Danielle Kelly took to social media to share her reaction to it.
Though understandably dejected, the Silver Fox BJJ star knows that she's still one of the best grapplers on the planet, and she'll be ready to prove it in a potential rematch with the new submission grappling champ. She wrote on Instagram:
"Bad day at work but I proved once again I belong at the top. Years ago, I would’ve shut down. Today went head to head against the number one 115lb grappler who’s beaten everyone in the weight class. I may not agree but I’ll be ready for a rematch and will improve. Thank you everyone I’m gonna enjoy the rest of my summer and get back to work."
