"Me and him are gonna go to the death" - Ian Garry was about to fight Khamzat Chimaev in an elevator
In a recent YouTube video, Ian Garry spoke about an interaction that he had with Khamzat Chimaev during UFC 273 fight week.
Chimaev and Gilbert Burns faced each other in April in a match that is considered a candidate for the 2022 fight of the year. Earlier that night, ‘The Future’ secured his second UFC win by unanimous decision against Darian Weeks.
During an interview with MMA On Point, Garry brought up an incident where he almost fought ‘Borz’ before their respective fights at UFC 273:
“I’ll tell you a funny story about Khamzat [Chimaev]. We got in the elevator, and me and my wife are standing there, press the button, doors open, Khamzat and his missus. I’d love to have a fight here. I’d love to just swing hands with Khamzat in the middle of an elevator. The stories would’ve been f****ing cool.”
Ian Garry continued by saying:
“And my missus is looking at me with eyes popped out of her f****ing skull. And she’s like, do it, have a fight with him. In my head I’m thinking my teammates about to fight him tomorrow. I’m not f***ing ruining that. There’s two f***ing women in here. Me and him are gonna go to the death if we fight in an elevator. We step out the lift and my wife just looks at me and goes, ‘You’re a p***y.’”
Garry and Chimaev are currently on different paths in the welterweight division. 'The Future' is slowly working his way up the ladder, while 'Borz' has skyrocketed up the UFC rankings.

What’s next for Ian Garry?
Ian Garry last fought at UFC 276 in July. The 25-year-old advanced his UFC record to 3-0 with a unanimous decision win against Gabe Green. ‘The Future’ has no plans to fight again until specific opportunities become available. During the UFC 276 post-fight media interview, Garry had this to say when asked what he wants next:
"I'll wait for the big fight or I'll wait for that opportunity when Conor comes back so we can put on a show for the fight fans and give Ireland what it deserves... If it's not Dublin, then put me and Conor on a card together because we will absolutely own that crowd and own that stadium and the Irish will take over wherever it's going to be."
Garry has emerged as a potential welterweight contender since going 2-0 in 2022. With Conor McGregor reportedly returning in mid-2023, the UFC could see an opportunity to market ‘The Future’ with McGregor’s loyal Irish fan base. Regardless of the opponent, the Kill Cliff FC fighter will surely be confident in his ability to win.
