Mikey Musumeci out of The Craig Jones Invitational after failure to secure an opponent: “Probably been the most viewed jiu-jitsu match ever”

Mikey Musumeci will no longer compete at the highly anticipated Craig Jones Invitational (CJI), which takes place on 16-17 Aug. Musumeci is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound grapplers in the world and was expected to have a super fight at the CJI.

However, according to the American, the competition's organizers could not secure an opponent for the scheduled super fight. He stated that his prospective opponent would have made for arguably the most viewed match in the sport's history.

Musumeci took to Instagram to share an update on his situation with the CJI and wrote this:

"Hey guys, unfortunately I'm out of the CJI now. We were attempting to make a legendary match that would probably have been the most viewed jiu-jitsu match ever but it fell through at the end. I want to thank Craig Jones for the opportunity he gave me; I will still be heavily supporting his event and what he is doing for jiu-jitsu! 2 months still until the biggest match of my life in Sept 6 in Denver with Kade [Ruotolo]."

Mikey Musumeci praises upcoming opponent Kade Ruotolo for promoting steroid-free BJJ

Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) have had an enormous presence in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for years, largely owing to the lack of frequent drug testing of the sport's athletes.

The consensus No.1-ranked submission grappler in the world, Gordon Ryan, has been coy about his usage of PEDs. However, there are other elite competitors who don't choose to promote the use of steroids, namely Mikey Musumeci and Kade and Tye Ruotolo.

Musumeci is scheduled to face Kade Ruotolo in a grappling match at ONE Championship in September and, ahead of the bout, shared praise for his opponent's attitude towards natural competitors.

He said this:

"Is it every event in jiu-jitsu doesn't have drug testing? No, half of them do. That means that [PEDs] shouldn't be legal. I am a big person against [steroids], so I feel like that's one of the things I want to help with in jiu-jitsu, is to get rid of this steroid-trend. And Kade also, I love him for that, he is also against it."
