MMA insider predicts Khamzat Chimaev's game plan for potential Alex Pereira fight, reveals “interesting” aspect about the match-up
Rumors of a potential fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Alex Pereira are creating a buzz on the internet. MMA analyst John McCarthy also weighed in on the potential bout and shared his thoughts on what he considers one of the most exciting rumored fights.
Chimaev has demonstrated why he is currently considered the best grappler in the promotion. In his most recent fight against Robert Whittaker at UFC 308, the Chechen fighter submitted the Australian via face crank in the first round, leaving Whittaker’s teeth misaligned.
Meanwhile, Pereira has delivered three knockouts in his three fights this year, solidifying his reputation as the top striker in the UFC. The reigning light heavyweight champion showcased a striking masterclass in the third and fourth rounds of his most recent fight against Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307.
McCarthy, on his podcast WEIGHING IN episode #533, discussed what makes the rumored fight intriguing, emphasizing ‘Borz’s wrestling and grappling prowess alongside ‘Poatan’s kickboxing skills. He said:
"Chimaev you know he's gonna come out and wrestle. You know he's gonna shoot that damn double leg from across the cage. Can you stop it? We know exactly where Poatan is strong. We know exactly what he can do. Can he knock Chimaev out? Absolutely, he can knock him out—everyone can get knocked out. But can Alex stop the takedown?”
“If he can’t stop the takedown, does he stop the submission? Because Chimaev is good at going after chokes and he's good at doing damage. But if Pereira survives and gets back to his feet for another round, where are we at? That’s what makes this fight exciting and interesting," he added.

Khamzat Chimaev confident in stylistic advantage over Alex Pereira while acknowledging knockout risk in potential fight
Khamzat Chimaev was interviewed by Michael Bisping in the lead-up to his UFC 308 fight against Robert Whittaker. During the interview, the Chechen fighter discussed the possibility of a fight with Alex Pereira.
‘Borz’ acknowledged Pereira’s knockout power but asserted that he has a stylistic advantage over the Brazilian. Chimaev said:
"I know stylistically this match for me is easier than other guys. But in striking, I'm honest, I know the guy can knock me out. I know the guy is a good striker. One of the best guys, the hardest puncher but I'm one of the best grappler-based wrestlers. He is not that."
