“My role models” - Mayssa Bastos takes inspiration from berimbolo masters, the Miyao brothers of BJJ
Brazilian fighter Mayssa Bastos has taken inspiration from many BJJ greats to further hone her game, including brothers Joao and Paulo Miyao, who are experts in her preferred technique of berimbolo.
The 26-year-old BJJ black belt shared this in an interview with ONE Championship ahead of her scheduled return to action at ONE Fight Night 24: Brooks vs Balart on Prime Video on Aug. 2 in Bangkok, Thailand. She will be challenging for the atomweight submission grappling world title against reigning divisional queen Danielle Kelly of the United States.
Mayssa Bastos said:
"The Miyao brothers were my role models and an inspiration to me in jiu-jitsu when I was younger, especially because I really liked the berimbolo, a technique they were experts in. But nowadays, I follow the example of my teachers, the Mendes brothers (Rafael and Guilherme), who were successful as competitors and are now also successful as teachers."
Mayssa Bastos is a highly decorated and successful BJJ athlete known for her extensive arsenal, which includes the berimbolo, performed by the guard player to take the opponent's back through inverting and spinning movements. Her coaches, the Mendes brothers, are widely credited for its execution in the modern era of grappling.
At ONE Fight Night 24, Bastos will be making her second outing in ONE Championship after her successful debut back in March against Japanese Kanae Yamada, who she defeated by unanimous decision.
ONE Fight Night 24: Brooks vs Balart on Prime Video will emanate from the famed Lumpinee Stadium and will be available live and for free to North American fans with an active Amazon Prime Video subscription.
Mayssa Bastos out to make it a short reign for Danielle Kelly
Mayssa Bastos is looking to make it a short reign for ONE atomweight submission grappling queen Danielle Kelly when they collide in a title clash at ONE Fight Night 24 on Prime Video on Aug. 2 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Kelly, 28, is making her first defense of the aromweight gold after becoming world champion in September last year. She defeated Cambodian-American fighter Jessa Khan by unanimous decision to become the inaugural titleholder in the division.
The victory also kept her unblemished record in the promotion at 3-0 since making her promotional debut in March 2022.
Meanwhile, Mayssa Bastos seeks to continue her ascent in ONE Championship, following a triumphant debut back in March. She will also be relying on her wide experience in the BJJ scene.
