Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal: Full results
Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal boxing event just wrapped up. The event took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on July 6 and featured several interesting matchups. From veteran MMA fighters to rising talent in boxing, a diverse group of athletes showed their talent at the event. So let's recap the fights and look at the full results.
The main event marked the rematch of Diaz and Masvidal's ceremonial BMF title fight at UFC 244 in November 2019. While 'Gamebred' had defeated Diaz with relative ease in the MMA fight, the rematch in boxing seemed a completely different story.
While both men are well past their prime at this point, Diaz started with his trademark flurries that seemed to be overwhelming Masvidal. 'Gamebred' worked in bursts of activity and appeared to have a pronounced power advantage.
Masvidal's powerful counters had a visible impact on Diaz, breaking his momentum several times. Large stretches of the fights were characterized by Diaz's relentless high-volume striking dotted with Masvidal's disrupting and powerful flurries.
While Diaz was the more active fighter for all ten rounds, Masvidal landed more strikes with greater accuracy. But neither man was able to break the other despite contesting at a furious pace. In the end, it was Diaz who edged past Masvidal to score a majority decision victory and avenge the UFC 244 loss.
In the co-main event, former WBA and IBF middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs fought Shane Mosley Jr., son of former champion Shane Mosley. The fight marked Jacobs' return to competition after suffering a split decision loss against John Ryder in February 2022. Meanwhile, Mosley Jr. was on a four-fight win streak with his recent win coming against Joshua Conley in December 2023.
In the fight, Mosley Jr. took the center of the ring from the get-go and forced Jacobs to stay committed to defense. The former middleweight champion struggled to figure out the range as most of his punches missed the mark. He showed flashes of brilliance and caught Mosley Jr. with good combinations but could not accumulate the damage with sustained assault.
Despite the increased activity level in the later rounds, Jacobs could not convince the judges and lost to Mosley Jr. by unanimous decision. This was by far the biggest win of Mosley Jr.'s career, who will now attempt to take the next step towards a world title.
Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis fought Chris Avila, a coach and teammate of Diaz on the main card. The bout marked Pettis' second boxing appearance. He debuted with a majority decision win over Roy Jones Jr. in April 2023. Meanwhile, Avila was the more experienced boxer heading into the fight with a 5-1 record as a pro.
The fight started at a slower pace and both men scored a few jabs in the opening round. But similar to his teammates, the Diaz brothers, Avila picked up pace as the fight progressed and overwhelmed Pettis with high-volume striking to earn a unanimous decision win.
Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal: Curmel Moton and Amado Vargas deliver knockouts
Floyd Mayweather's protege and highly touted prospect Curmel Moton attempted to extend his professional boxing record to 4-0 against Nikolai Buzolin, who had a 9-8-1 record before the fight.
Moton wasted no time and started inflicting damage on Buzolin, mixing up the strikes to punish the body and the head. Reeling under the pressure, Buzolin suffered a knockdown in the closing seconds of the first round. However, Moton picked up where he left off, finishing the veteran boxer in the second round.
Ryan Garcia's brother Sean Garcia fought Fernando Vargas Jr.'s son Amado Vargas on the main card. Both have shown promise in their relatively young boxing careers. The fight had an interesting element to it as both were undefeated in the professional circuit heading into the fight, with one of them set to lose the '0' from the loss column.
Vargas was a proven finisher with four KOs to his credit and the performance against Garcia proved his finishing ability. Vargas walked down Garcia from the opening bell and softened him up with a variety of attacks. While Vargas appeared to be winning each round, Garcia connected with a few good shots of himself.
Vargas dropped Garcia with an uppercut in the fourth round but Garcia answered the 10-count and continued to fight. However, Vargas stung him several times in the next round as Garcia tried to survive without meaningful offense of his own.
The referee stopped the action in Round 6 as Vargas maintained a sustained assault. While Garcia was not out, he could not keep his opponent at bay and went into a defensive shell.
In the main card opening bout, Devin Cushing defeated Manny Correa by unanimous decision. Cushing kept Correa at the end of his jab as the latter tried to be the aggressor.
Correa's attempts to make the fight ugly were thwarted as Cushing refused to abandon the game plan and tagged Correa every time he tried to get past the jab. Correa managed to breach Cushing's defenses a few times but it was not enough to shift the momentum in his favor.
Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal prelims results
In the headlining bout on the preliminary card, another one of Nate Diaz's associates, Alan Sanchez, fought Louie Lopez at welterweight. Lopez outboxed Sanchez en route to a unanimous decision win.
Undefeated prospect Kenny Lopez fought Andres Martinez on the prelims in an attempt to extend his professional boxing record to a perfect 10-0. He accomplished the task with a unanimous decision win. However, Martinez offered good resistance winning quite a few exchanges.
In the only heavyweight contest on the card, Steven Dunn fought Gabriel Aguilar Costa. As many expected, the fight did not go the distance and Costa emerged victorious with a second-round KO of Dunn.
In the welterweight bout in the prelims, Bryce Logan finished Jose Aguayo by third-round KO to get back in the win column.
