Nico Carrillo wants ‘to be the one’ to defeat Jonathan Haggerty and take the belt
Scottish knockout artist Nico Carrillo has his eyes for the longest time on the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title and given the opportunity he wants him to be the one to take it from reigning divisional king Jonathan Haggerty.
The No. 1 bantamweight Muay Thai contender made this known during the post-fight interview following his latest victory at ONE Fight Night 23: Ok vs Rasulov on Prime Video on July 5 in Thailand. Nico Carrillo shared his preference on who he wanted to face if ever in a title fight between Haggety and Superlek Kiatmoo9, who are set to dispute the bantamweight gold in September in the United States.
The 'King of the North' said:
"I would prefer to fight Haggerty, not because he's better or anything. I would just like to be the one to take the belt from him."
Haggerty will be defending the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title for the second time at ONE 168 in Denver, Colorado, U.S.A. on Sept. 6. This time he will be challenged by the flyweight kickboxing king Superlek in a marquee all-champion title clash.
Nico Carrillo fortifies claim for world title shot with fourth straight KO win
Top bantamweight Muay Thai contender Nico Carrillo solidified his claim for a world title shot after racing to his fourth straight KO victory in as many matches at ONE Fight Night 23 on Prime Video on July 5 in Thailand.
The 25-year-old Glasgow, Scotland native dominated Thai veteran Saemapetch Fairtex in their bantamweight showdown, which he punctuated with three knockdowns in the second round for the TKO victory.
The win, which also earned him another $50,000 performance bonus from ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, had Nico Carrillo showcasing once again why he has become one of the top fighters in Muay Thai since making his promotional debut in April last year.
Overall, he has a 27-3 professional record and has won his last 15 matches.
Carrillo has made it known that becoming ONE world champion is his topmost goal and will not stop until he realizes it.
